What is bmcalc?

bmcalc is a calculator for your GTK+-Desktop. It is released under the GNU General Public License. The special thing about bmcalc is that it supports many many functions. Well, not yet, I have to do some things for school occasionally. The current version is 0.0.3.

News

Feb 22 2000 The bmcalc home is now on soureforge. A mailing-list is available.
bmcalc has passed the stage which Eric Raymond titled ``Plan to throw one away; you will, anyhow.''[1] for the first time ;-). I redesigned the classes so they are more transparent and easier to extend. It is now a GNOME application, too. The results are in bmcalc-0.0.4pre (screenshot). For interested / curious developers. This release is not usable as a calculator.

Oct 1999 As you may have noticed, bcalc changed its name to bmcalc. This happened because I got a mail from Brian Dodge; he wrote he's been publishing a shareware calculator named bcalc for several years. He asked if I could change the name. As this is a conclusive concern, I thought out a new name. At this point I'd like to apologize for my lacking creativity :) (But maybe you have a look at the FAQ q2?). I start naming the tarballs bmcalc from the 0.0.4 release on.

Download latest version of bmcalc

The latest version is 0.0.3 and (currently) only available in source. It really should compile on any system with a C++-compiler and GTK+. Since the only system I have access to is my amdk6-pc-linux-gnu I cannot tell for sure. I really would like you to mail your experiences. bmcalc-0.0.4pre is also available. See the news on top.

Future

  • make use of the GMP library for multiple precision floats. I defer that for now; I'll concentrate on usability. But it will come. Promised.
  • add € conversion function (suggested by Marco Giardini marco@tecnogi.com)
Do you have an idea how to integrate this into the layout efficiently, not much space-consuming and intuitively?
  • make layout configurable (in not so near future; suggested by Gustavo Junior Alves alves@correionet.com.br)
  • add base conversion (suggested by Alisdair McDiarmid alisdair@wasters.org)

Currently I implement the calculating facility. It is modular. You will be able to use other numbers as well, like complex numbers for example.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Will bmcalc have a command line interface to do calculations in a script?
No, this is not planned. Genius serves better for this purpose.
  2. What does bmcalc stand for?
Well, I actually thought of letting bm stand for Bluemento (the name of my imaginative company), but since I don't know whether someone has a trademark on that name, you can decide for yourself. calc should be clear :).
  3. Will the next question always be the last question?
    I think so, yes.
  4. Is it planned to add more questions here?
That depends on you. If you ask and the question is general enough, it will be added here.
Just ask.

Feedback

Feedback goes to me. If you feel anything should be added to bmcalc, just mail a note. I have some ideas myself, but I will see what I implement first. If it doesn't compile for you, just mail a note. At this early stage, bmcalc is so simple, it should compile perfectly. If you are concerned about the language or anything else on this page, just mail a note. Thanks.
In summary: feel encouraged to contribute in any way. It is welcome.
